The current plan is to move the application specific files out of the data area and into the source code GitHub repository. This will eliminate the need to store and maintain some 800 files currently in the data area and make them available to all developers to edit and PR back into the system. The remainder of the data is mostly SPICE and DEMs. The test data will be distributed along side the data area, but as a separate download. Efforts to significantly reduce the test data volume are ongoing as tests are converted to the gtest environment.

In either of the two cases above, two versions of the data area will be maintained for a time TBD. This means both will continue to receive daily updates. The first will be compatible with versions of ISIS prior to 4.1.0 and structured identical to the current version distributed on the isisdist rsync servers. The second will be the version compatible with ISIS 4.1.0 and up with the application specific data moved to the GitHub repository.
